Blu ray disc system uses a blue violet laser .The wave length is less so the CD can hold more data than the conventional DVDs or CDs. The blu ray disc puts the information closer to the surface so it is not susceptible to contamination or scratches like the older CDs. It also has a protective material on the disc. These discs do not need protective covering or jackets.
Corporations supporting Blu Ray technology are Hewitt-Packard, Apple Inc, Dell and Panasonic. Blu Ray disc was developed by Sony in 2002 as a next generation data and video storage formal alternative to DVD. Sony is shipping 50GB dual layer Blu ray disc media in the US. Later this year Sony plans to have 50GB dual layer rewritable disc.
Formatting has always been a problem for the user even the VHS and Betamax . In the 1980’s Video 8 vs VSH-C and later Hi8 Vs S-VHS-C camcorders tape formats were acceptable until the mini DVDs replaced them. DVD Formats DVD+R versus DVD-R were confusing as to which format to buy, but now they have DVD-+ R which support both formats.
It seems we have come a long way in the last 50 years. LG Electronics just announced the world’s first dual format Blu ray HD/DVD player to be coming out in early 2007. LG expects the technology breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high definition disc formats for both the producers and consumers.
This is great news for us because it will take some of the guess work out when we go to buy electronics. This is particularly good for older people who were not brought up with all this modern technology. It seems like the manufacturers are beginning to realize this and are making some of these things more compatible.
