Are Silicone Breast Implants Safe?

If you want larger breasts then you can choose between silicone breast implants and saline-filled breast implants. In fact, more than 90% of all women would rather choose silicone breast implants than saline filled implants because they are cosmetically superior.

However, since their interception silicone breast implants have always been in the news because many women claimed that silicone breast implants have made them ill. Although silicone is known to be biologically inactive, it was said that silicone breast implants even caused cancer in some women.

For this reason silicone breast implants were taken off the market in 1992. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) required more tests to find out if Food and Drug Administration are safe or not. Today, almost 15 years later, the FDA approved silicone breast implants again in 2006 but also stated that there are still risks but silicone implants are 'reasonably safe'.

This is good news, especially for the plastic surgery industry because breast implant surgery it is a very lucrative business. More than 3 million women have received breast implants already and with costs of about $4,000 to $8,000 per surgery it is multi-million dollar industry.

However, it is also good news for the many women looking for larger breasts or a better shape of their breasts. Do not forget those women who are looking for an implant after a breast cancer surgery. Breast implants can be a huge relief for emotionally stressed women, no matter of the reasons.

Beside the risks of a surgery itself, the main risk of silicone breast implants lies in a leaking implant. It is still unknown today what harm a leaking implant can do. Silicone is considered to be biologically inactive but the FDA required more testing in order to answer this question for sure. It is sure at least, that a saline-filled implant is less risky than silicone because it will only leak salt water. Saline implants were approved by the FDA in 2000 already.

Saline filled implants should not be used for women under 18 and silicone breast implants not under 22. The reason is that the breast tissue may still change while in puberty or close after it. Also consider that silicone breast implants are not forever and that you most likely will have to have additional surgeries in future. If you want to remove your breast implants you must also know that it is not likely that you get your old shape back.

Not matter if you choose saline or silicone breast implants, the implants should be examined by your doctor once a year.
