Although men and women with androgenetic alopecia may have similar patterns of hair loss, there are many differences in the balding patterns between them. It's common for men to lose hair along the frontal hairline, temple areas and the crown. Women tend to retain their frontal hairline and the hair on the top of their scalp. It is uncommon for women to lose all the hair in any thinning area. Women tend not to lose as much hair in the temple area as men do.
Androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in women. Commonly those with this condition will experience hair loss on the top and sides of the head.
Affecting approximately one-third of susceptible women, androgenetic alopecia results in noticeable thinning usually after menopause, when production of the female hormone estrogen slows down dramatically or stops altogether.
Women should not be concerned about losing 100-125 hairs a day, as these are replaced in the next growth phase. It is when these hairs do not grow back, or when daily hair shed exceeds 125 hairs that you should consult an expert about your hair loss.
