Champix works by binding to the receptors that would normally bind with the nicotine in cigarettes as the active ingredient in Champix (varenecline) has a greater affinity with this neuronal nicotine receptor. Anyone taking Champix should set a firm date for giving up smoking in weeks one or two of treatment. The full course of treatment lasts 12 weeks and this can be extended for a further 12 weeks if the patient has successfully managed to give up smoking and has not suffered any side effects.
Two comparative studies were conducted to compare Champix’s effectiveness against Bupropion (the other leading smoking cessation drug) and this demonstrated that at week 4 of treatment, Champix had a continuous quit rate of 44.4% compared with 29.5% for Bupropion. Not all patients managed to remain non-smokers after treatment stopped however. Around half of those who had successfully quit using either method were back on cigarettes at the end of a 12 month period.
From 1st July 2007, smoking will be banned in public places in England which should be an ideal opportunity for smokers to kick the habit.
